Emotional & spiritual transformation
Storytelling & expression
40 Songs and a Mic is a gospel and trauma-informed hip-hop record label dedicated to healing, storytelling, and transformation through music.
Our mission is to use music, testimony, and community expression to support emotional healing, spiritual growth, and trauma recovery. We believe that every story deserves to be heard, every voice deserves to be amplified, and every person deserves a path to healing.
Without rehabilitation programs, 7 out of 10 return to prison
California programs losing critical rehabilitation funding
1 in 3 Californians impacted by the criminal justice system
As state funding for rehabilitation programs disappears, thousands are being left without the resources they need to transform their lives.
Funding Cut
State rehabilitation programs facing massive budget reductions
People Affected
Incarcerated individuals losing access to rehabilitation resources
Action Needed
Every donation directly fills the gap left by budget cuts
"Without programs like 40 Songs and a Mic, these individuals lose more than just resources—they lose hope, purpose, and the path to redemption."
The Reality
When rehabilitation programs disappear, recidivism rates soar and communities suffer
Just as crude oil must be refined to become gasoline—a source of power and purpose—so too must we refine our raw experiences into something that fuels transformation.
"We all have crude oil buried beneath us. The question is: will you choose to dig it up and refine it, or leave it in the ground?"
The Choice
Extract, refine, and transform
The Gasoline curriculum guides you through this refining process—extracting lessons from your past, processing them with intention, and converting them into fuel that powers your future and inspires others.
A three-part journey from awareness to transformation through trauma-informed writing, reflection, and self-exploration

"Healing Through Poetry & Breaking the Cycle of Violence"
PURPOSE:
Uncovering unconscious survival decisions formed in trauma
The first installment of Gasoline serves as an entry point into deep self-exploration, guiding participants to uncover the unconscious decisions they made in response to abuse, neglect, and early life trauma. These decisions—often formed in moments of fear, pain, or survival—can sound like: "this will never happen to me again," "I have to stay guarded," or "I need to become stronger so no one can hurt me." While these beliefs were once protective, they often evolve into automatic patterns that shape behavior, relationships, and identity without conscious awareness.
Through the use of hip-hop and reflective writing, participants are given a safe and structured space to examine these internal commitments. Poetry becomes the tool that allows buried thoughts, emotio...
INCLUDES:

"Every crime has roots. What is not healed is repeated."
PURPOSE:
Taking accountability for how unhealed trauma perpetuates harm
The second installment of Gasoline moves participants beyond awareness and into deeper accountability by examining the cycle of victimization. Building on the foundation established in Gasoline I, this phase challenges individuals to confront a difficult but necessary truth: those who have been hurt can, without healing, begin to hurt others—often in ways that mirror their own experiences.
At the core of this work is the understanding that "what is not healed is repeated." Survival-based thinking, developed in response to trauma, can evolve into patterns of behavior that prioritize self...
INCLUDES:

"Healing is not erasing the cracks. It is learning to see through them differently."
PURPOSE:
Renewing the mind through truth-based perspectives and intentional response
The final installment of Gasoline focuses on transformation through the renewal of the mind. After uncovering unconscious beliefs and taking accountability for harmful patterns, this phase challenges participants to examine the way trauma has shaped how they see themselves, others, and the world around them. These "broken lenses" are distorted thinking patterns formed through pain, fear, and survival—filters that influence perception, reactions, and decision-making.
Participants explore how these distorted lenses can lead to misinterpretation in everyday situations—seeing threat where there may be none, responding with defensiveness instead of understanding, or r...

"Your conversation with Juan about ACEs and how childhood trauma leaves lasting tracks in the body and mind made me think deeply about the links between adversity, health, and healing. The way you talked about practical regulation strategies and rebuilding dignity really speaks to the importance of bridging scientific understanding with compassion and real-world support."

"Hearing Juan share how routine, reflection, and faith provided a rhythm of healing in your latest episode really moved me. The emphasis on transforming adversity through connection and support reflects so much of what I witness daily in adoption work. Trauma may be the aftermath, but it's relationships and safe spaces that guide the way forward, a truth at the heart of both your podcast and my professional mission."
Donna

"Your recent episode with Juan made a real impression on me, especially as you explored how the act of asking for help can change the entire trajectory of a life impacted by childhood adversity. The way you both highlighted that trauma is about the internal aftermath—not just the event itself—and discussed the four S's of secure bonding was powerfully done. I appreciate how you connected practical healing tools to everyday habits and hope."

"Hearing Juan's story on your latest episode, especially his description of the painful split between the authentic self and the survival self, really struck me. The way you both explore how community becomes a "repair shop" for old wounds hit home."
Evan
Podcast Listener
"Your recent episode with Juan made a strong impact on me—the way you walked through the connection between a rough childhood, ACEs, and the brain's stress circuits was powerful. I especially appreciated how you moved from breaking down cortisol spikes and survival states into the practical reality of regulating with small, daily habits like breathwork and grounding. The compassion-first approach and the bridge you built between science and everyday experience really struck a chord."

"Your conversation with Juan about growth behind the wall was truly powerful. The way you both explored how trauma-informed practices can help people find their authentic selves, especially when discussing the split between who we are and who we're pressured to be, struck a real chord with me. Juan's story about a safe room and the importance of being seen made me think about how rarely history offers those kinds of restorative spaces, especially for those who survived some of humanity's darkest chapters."
